Event - "Bring Your Own"

(April the 7th 2013)

This time the title of the text, at first, sounds a bit odd but we have good explanation for it. The geocachers from Zagreb Robert (heroj_ulice) and Maja (maki433) have decided to organize geocaching event in Zagreb at park Maksimir. They named the event Bring your own.

Where are we in that story? We have decided to go to Zagreb with Zagy from Osijek to participate on that event. Event lasted only for a day, but extended weekend from Friday to Monday allowed us to visit many more locations in Zagreb and to find some geocaches.

Our road trip to Zagreb lasted about five and a half hours. That is when group of geocachers is going somewhere. We stopped four times and in two stops we also searched for a geocache. smile And we haven't found them and we aren't disappointed because of that. We had a break from the road, saw some nice location and all in all it was great.

Next day the rain was pouring down and Zagy and me went geocaching while Maja with her sister Katarina participated on competition in logic for world competition in China, but that is another story. smile Did we mention the rain? Well we are mentioning her again because it was really exhausting too find caches and to log them while everything around was wet and muddy. smile But again, as you can see, smiles are everywhere in the text so don't event think that rain could spoil our adventure.

Zagy and me went to find geocaches around part of Zagreb called Novi Zagreb (everything beyond river Sava) and first cache thrilled us with its look. Spoonge Bob, as you can see on the picture, hid a log-sheet in his chest. smile

On our way we searched few geocaches at famous roundabout at Savski Gaj. Although Maja and me found them already it wasn't problem for me to come here again with Zagy. I've recalled when I was comming here all the time while Maja was at college in Zagreb and she lived here at Savski Gaj.

Church of St Cross

Eh, if wasn't for that rain, maybe we would play some football, on an auxiliary stadium NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac (photo & photo). We walked to the church of St. Cross of very interesting design but without visible cross anywhere on the roof. Later we obtained the information that the cross is creatively incorporated at the church turret and we just couldn't see it. It was "definitely" because of the rain. smile And you know about Zagy from previous texts and that he is a bit "crazy" when it comes to what he will or won't do. So he, firmly, decided to went in the church, just to peek. It turned out that he burst on a batism or something like that, took some photos of him there for the statistics. smile (photo & photo)

Now we are going in direction that lead us to big public market at Utrine. Before market we have visited the statue of blessed Alojzije Stepinac, but the statue was missing. We are hopping that its renovating is the reason why it is missing. We also visited the statue of cardinal Franjo Kuharić which was recently placed and displayed for the public.

And then came the public market Utrine. Imagine the situation with this four elements: public market, Saturday, lots of people and hidden geocache nearby. It was almost impossible to grab this one without somebody seeing you what you're doing. Have in mind that the geocache location must be kept secret for those who aren't geocachers (muggles).

But Zagy, with the help of mine photography technique - silly tourists that picture everything, managed to grab the box so we logged this one successfully. A bit hungry and exhausted we sat at nearby burger house at the public market and ate fat kebabs and toasted with bear. smile

There were many more geocaches on our search at Saturday that we could describe. But this text is about geocaching event in Zagreb and we still weren't on it. smile

So, fast forward few caches ahead and it is Sunday - official day of the event. Maja and Katarina - Maja's sister that is also a geocacher, joined us. Unfortunately the weather was again cloudy and cold so our pictures are also grey without vivid colors, but that didn't distract us from enjoying our first, real event. The geocaching event is gathering of everyone from everywhere so on this event were geocacher from Slovenia, Polland and Serbia.

Where do we start from? For the first time we met people from geocaching forum on the Internet. First of all, those are the people that form the geocaching crew from Zagreb, and who establish the geocaching association in Croatia. And yes, what about the explanation of the title of the event Bring your own? Whole idea was that everyone suggest the hide and to place its own geocache in Zagreb. For us that wasn't very suitable but Zagy placed its own geocache. His geocache has a goal to connect geocachers so there is the name for it "Osijek - Zagreb friendship". If the weather was nice other things, beside geocaches, would be brought. It was supposed to hang around on the meadow, to play the games like "Don't, get angry", badminton and something similar. For us this was nice, how it would only be if the weather was sunny at April...?

This event wouldn't be complete if you don't have the chance to find the hidden geocaches first. Those geocaches aren't published yet but we had the gpx files. That also attracts foreign geocachers so they could have the chance to see and find something first. The names of those geocaches we won't discover, so you'll need to go to geocaching over Maksimir by yourself.

Collective DNF / photo by Matko Jelkić

One of funnier adventure on the event was certainly the collective DNF or team did not find. smile Yes, you have red it well. That happens too. Geocacher Boris didn't place his geocache on time so, when we came on the location and searched everywhere, couldn't find it. Of course that we phoned Boris, who was searching geocaches on other side of park, with other part of geocaching crew. Only then we found out about so called travel geocache - new thing in geocaching, geocache that was in Boris's pocket. smile Of course, we are kidding. Geocache has to have its coordinates and must be stationed. But we believe that you got the picture how we and other foreign geocachers laughed at all. smile

Although it was muddy and cloudy, whole fun wasn't missing. Constantly there were geocaching stories that were told while we were walking from one to another geocache. Geocachers really have inexhaustible source of stories about geocaches or locations where they were hidden.

The way to another geocache

Geocaching event is always opportunity to practice English. No matter where someone comes from, everyone can speak some English. If you even don't know to say some word you wave with your hands a bit and everybody gets it. smile

We really didn't know how big park Maksimir was and how much can it offer until we had a tour around. We can definitely recommend to take a day for walk over Maksimir and to have time to visit residents of ZOO park in Maksimir. smile

Geocaching event and Sunday are over. We thank everyone, but especially organizer of this lovely event and well spent day on activities that every geocacher loves - nice people, nice walk around the park and search for hidden geocaches.

On Monday there were just Maja and me while Katarina and Zagy were absent because of work. Monday weather was total opposite comparing previous days - warm and very sunny. When we found out that in our region Slavonija was cloudy and rainy so we prolonged our stay in Zagreb. Of course that we have found some geocaches during that day but that wasn't the point. The goal was to make use of sunny day and smile. smile

We have returned home safely and as you can see we are full of impressions and praise how it was fun for us. We can hardly wait for another similar event from same or similar crew from Zagreb.
