Geocaching - Baja

(10th of March 2013)

Our adventure, this time, was in city Baja in Hungary which is situated north-east from city Pecs. The plan was to find nine hidden geocaches in Baja, but as usual the plan was exceeded so we have found ten geocaches.

On that cloudy day, we departed somewhat earlier about 11 o'clock. Our road trip was prolonged half an hour because of column of cars at the border pass Udvar. But the trip, which was a bit long, our chauffeur Zagy drove easily so we crossed the bridge over Danube at 13:30 and came to Baja. Right next to the bridge we have found our first geocache that day. Cache was creatively hidden, so Zagy as a premium member, decided to give the owner a favorite point because of its ingenuity and creativity.

From the bridge we drove to the monument of Istvan Türr-u where two geocache containers were hidden, one traditional and one virtual.

The spot itself, sun that came through the clouds, and walk by the shore of river Sugovica simply delighted us. We just needed to stop to photograph moment around us (photo & photo).

We spotted the traditional cache without problems, but to grab it was a bit harder. But Zagy didn't see the problem in that and he rolled up his sleeves and got the cache.

Now we sat down on the other side of the river band that is turned to river Danube to log the cache.

Virtual cache was the monument that was at the end of the river band where river Sugovica connects to river Danube. Whole point of the monument was to pass whole river band and no matter which side of the shore you pick you cannot stay indifferent when you see the beauty of rivers and surroundings. For us the monument was special in more ways than one. Primarily as soon as you reach the monument you immediately notice those crazy, circular and steep stairs. Then, right when you climb you spot two things - the enchanting view and circular bench on which you can rest from those stairs that we mentioned. smile (photo & photo)

And third characteristically, not just for this monument but for whole Hungary, were padlocks placed on the entire fence. And only then we remembered that we have forgot to bring our own padlock to lock it on a nice place. Of course that we've made photos of everything, but we won't show you the view from the monument so you must come here and see it for yourself.

And what do you think is coming next on our visit to Baja? Certainly not some geocache, photo or some walk but picnic. smile Do you remember our trip from 11 until 13:30 to Baja? Well, it's not 13:30 anymore and we are very hungry. smile So we went on children playground and sat down on the widest bench that we could find. We can only say one thing. We ate all our sandwiches, took some photos while Zagy made his first sandwich. smile

With our bellies full we couldn't just leave this place, and not to visit children playground. Maja, who is a child in her soul, has found her place on children's slide. smile

Next two hidden geocaches were showing churches. The chapel of St. John was closer so we decided to find it first. When we came to the place again we spotted children playground, but this time there were two grannies at the playground and one was swaying on the swing. smile Cache was very nicely hidden, in the style of lookout on the hill, so those two grannies watched us with curiosity while we were searching for the cache. If the cache by any chance goes missing than those grannies muggled him. smile

The second one was the orthodox church settled on some road crossing so this was a type of drive-in cache. Cache was very well hidden but because of the wrong measured coordinates we hanged a bit until Zagy, as experienced geocacher, found it.

From this point on things became even more interesting as Zagy decided to phone geocacher Balazs who he met recently. Balas answered the call immediately and decided to met us at his own hidden geocache. He also talked English quite good so we didn't have bigger problems about communication.

His hidden geocache was Metuzalem machine - locomotive. It was very nice location with even nicer displayed machine at the spot. We didn't even start to look for the cache when Zagy found it. It was even pouring slight rain, but that didn't distract him in his search for the hidden box.

Another Balasz's geocache was a mystery type of cache. But because, the whole listing of the cache was on Hungarian and the text is translated poorly by google translator we just couldn't solve the mystery. So Balazs decided to reveal the final coordinates, and to keep us company while we were searching for it. And during the whole search the weather was normal, but when we wanted to sign the logbook it looked like the whole sky went down. Such local and heavy downpour we didnt' experience for a really long period.

Together in mexican restauran

And so, well, "immersed" in the rain, we finally ended up in the restaurant, specifically Mexican restaurant which Balazs recommended. Zagy and Maja decided to eat something.

In the comfortable surroundings of the Mexican restaurants we talked about the number of found geocaches. Balazs even shown us his geocoins that he own.

Also he told us that he is geocaching with his friends from Hungary and that they founded an "Alisca cacher" club. He invited us on the St. Ladislav event - geocachers meeting which will be held between 28th - 30th of June this year. We have also invited him to visit our country and our local geocaches where we live. We are really glad that we made another friend through geocaching.

After dinner we have decided to visit the square in front of city hall in Baja. Every year on second weekend in July on this same square international fish festival is held. It's international competition in making the best fish soup. It was getting dark slow but that didn't distract us to make panoramic photo of this square which is open for traffic when there isn't any competition on it. smile

On the very end of our geocaching in Baja we found one cache in total darkness, so we missed the whole point that geocache was showing. We thought that geocache is showing nice location of children playground but it was showing one church in the vicinity. We just couldn't saw it because of the dark. smile

On our way home, just before crossing the border we stopped at the gas station and also fed two hungry cats. Because enormous amount of food that we brought with us it wasn't a problem to share some with them. smile Everyone happy and with our bellies full we safely returned to our homes.
