Geocaching - Slavonski Brod

Crest of Brodsko-posavska county

In todays text we wish to describe you the geocaching adventure in Slavonski Brod. Geocaching isn't only activity that involves seeking geocaches but it is also important to hide a few around. So our field trip on Saturday 12th of October 2013 was more about hiding geocaches over Brodsko-posavska county.

Whole idea came from our local geocacher Dr. Zagy. He said that this is the only county in Croatia that still doesn't have at least one hidden geocache. You would think: "So what, it doesn't matter!". Well the story lead us in opposite direction. There is one geocache in Croatia that has a condition that you need to fulfill to able to log it as found it. Geocache requires that you have found at least one geocache from every county in Croatia, so 21 total. You don't believe us? Here is the link on that amazing geocache and see it for yourself. smile

But, let us get back on our story about field trip to Slavonski Brod. So Zagy contacted as, Maja and me are free for that weekend and the bonus is that this Saturday was announced as the warmest in October this year. And it was just that. Sun was shining all the time so you could freely walk in shirts without fear that you will shudder in shade.

Autumn colors / author: Matko Jelkić

Driving towards Slavonski Brod was simply enchanting. In 9-10 AM sun was slightly shining over top of the hills as you driving near Papuk. And it was that time of early Autumn when colors variated from summer green to those autumn yellow and red. At the end everything looked like somebody played with brush over treetops. smile

Moving towards Slavonski Brod we were passing through place Rastušje. And how we usually follow those brown tourist signs, that tell you if there is something interesting around, we saw a sign written: Birth house of Dragutin Tadijanović. We stopped here while Zagy already created a multi-cache hide to show other geocachers where grew up one of the prominent writers in Croatian literature.

Fields in Rastušje / author: Matko Jelkić

A bit further from Tadijanović birth house fields were stretching surrounded by hills. And again those colors, that we wrote before, won so we decided to go somewhere there to hide a geocache. We gave Zagy the home made box and logbook for geocache and we are very proud of that because now we feel like this was team work. Zagy and me hid the geocache while Maja was waiting on nearby bench and absorbed the sun's rays that day. smile Then we all came up with great idea. What wouldn't Maja go and find a hidden geocache to confirm if the coordinates are accurate. Maja also really loves written work of D. Tadijanović so it was an extra incentive that this cache is logged as found. So Maja found the cache, coordinates are precise so we can go further on our way.

Maja in front of steam machine / author: Matko Jelkić

When we came to Slavonski Brod we accidentally found good parking spot that was looking at the four machines produced in factory Đuro Đaković. We didn't hesitate at all to place a geocache here, because we simply must show those machines. And after 10 minutes this location had its own, cleverly hidden, micro box that only awaits its finders.

Statue of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić / author: Matko Jelkić

Further we went into center of town because we wanted to take a walk over square of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić and to sit on some sunny terrace, drink some coffee and to relax from exhaustive research where to hide next geocache. smile

After short pause we went to the promenade by river Sava in order to find some 3D pictures somewhere near. Zagy told us that those pictures are one of the larger in Croatia. But, when we asked every passenger how to find them no one wasn't sure if there are some in this town.

Spacious courtyard of the fortress Brod / author: Matko Jelkić

Finaly we gave up that idea and headed toward Fortress Brod. Only when we started walking throughout it we realized how the fortress had wide courtyard, bridge, lake and huge walls that surrounded her. The only problem was where to hide a geocache and not to be seen by many visitors (for geocachers those are muggles) during the search. But, the problem was quickly solved, idea about hiding a geocache was successfully conducted and now you see geocache here when you are looking at geocache maps.

Slowly the day was passing by so we decided to go home and on the way to it hide a few geocaches. After all we came up with a geocache fever for hiding geocaches and you can experience it too if you start wildly hiding geocaches around. smile

Info board about Sovsko lake / author Matko Jelkić

While we were driving back Zagy mentioned that there is one lake at place Ruševo called Sovsko lake. In short we can only say that Sovosko lake is important nature site because of wetland habitats of high biodiversity which is less in the world, and also in Croatia. It is also assumed that the lake is a remnant of the former Pannonian sea since fossilized remains of marine organisms have been found in its depths. More official information you can find out from this link. And we can describe you what can you see there. All around lake stretches an education trail with lots of info boards from wich you can find out about plants and animals that are characteristic for this location. Beside that all around trail there are already made barbecues, benches, tables and child playgrounds that can use all visitors. Simply said this is location for relaxation for whole family and now you have here a hidden geocache. Do we need to say something more? smile

We stopped on two more locations on our way home. We successfully hid a geocache at imaginary border from Požeško-slavonska to Osječko-baranjska county. As we all came from Osječko-baranjska county there wasn't a dilemma if we need to wish welcome to geocachers into our county. smile

And for those tourists - geocachers we also hid a geocache at the nearby spring of drinking water so they wouldn't stay thirsty. But it wasn't easy to hid this geocache because visitors were constantly visiting this place while Zagy was undisturbedly trying to hide a geocache. We even hung out with various visitors to not to be suspicious. In process of that we got from one visitor some kind of healing plant that already grows in our garden. smile

And so the geocaching hiding day has passed, and geocaches are eagerly awaiting those who are eager for adventure simply called a search for hidden treasure.
